This 120’ x 40’ Aluminum SWATH crew boat was built in 1999 for Trico Marine to quickly shuttle as many as 250 passengers to offshore platforms. She was built by Eastern Shipbuilding Group and designed by Petrobras. The goal was to create an offshore crew transport vessel that would phase out costly helicopter rides and rough voyages on conventional, mono-hull crew boats. The SWATH design provided a smooth ride and met the requirements of an average speed of 25 knots. The M/V Deacon is capable of speeds over 30 knots. The ergonomic requirements were defined to limit the incidence of seasickness to less than 5% in 4 hours exposure in the 2- to 3- meter seas so common to the Campos Basin where the vessel would operate. They also required comfortable seating, ample legroom and an HVAC system with a relatively high rate of exchange. The final design presented a number of challenges, while incorporating many high tech features, such as a gas turbine coupled to controlled pitch propellers via a 27:1 reduction gear and an active fin system. The vessel was built for $23 million. New construction cost to replace the vessel is estimated at over $30 million. While the M/V Deacon is currently powered with two Allison 501 KF turbines, she may be re-powered with conventional engines. A recently constructed model shows what the vessel’s outer decks would look like with conventional power. After five years of service in Brazil, the vessel was placed in freshwater storage for five years. During the five years of storage, the crew was on board and machinery was run regularly. The M/V Deacon was transferred to Seacraft Shipyard where she was dry-docked in June 2008 and the bottom of the vessel was repainted. Seacraft is in Amelia, Louisiana, USA. Can be reconfigured or re-powered to: Crew Boat, Passenger Ferry, Dinner Cruises, Whale Watching, Research Vessel, Casino, Military Yacht, Seismic Surveying, Live Aboard Dive Boat, Dive Support Vessel.

The vessel is 65 ft long and 35ft wide with two Caterpillar diesel engines. Fuel capacity in two tanks is 6500 gallons and vessel cruises at 14 to 15 knots and burns 35 gallons per hour per engine. It was apparently a pilot boat but is first class inside and out and could maybe be retrofitted as a luxury yacht. Currently it sleeps 12 people in 6 cabins with 2 bunks in each - individual air conditioning in each cabin.  There are two bathrooms and one shower. It rides very smoothly with self adjusting equipment to go in rough seas. It was built in 1993 but engines have been rebuilt and whole vessel has been meticulously maintained - Original cost was $6+ million.

Ocean Dawn was built by Richard Ironworks of Lowestoft in 1956. She was built as one of a quartet for Bloomfields of Great Yarmouth. The other three were Ocean Surf YH107, Ocean Crest YH207, and Ocean Trust YH377. While in ownership to Bloomfields in April 1961 OCEAN DAWN was involved in the rescue of six crew from the FRANDOR LT369, after she had caught on fire. She fished out of Yarmouth until 1963, when she was sold to Small & Co. of Lowestoft and registered as LT466.She later became the property of The East Anglian Ice & Cold Storage Company, where she began trawling full time. In 1969 she was sold to John Muir of Cellardyke, and moved to Kirkcaldy and registered KY371. Unfortunately, whilst berthed in Aberdeen Harbour in 1979 she caught her stern under some pilings as the tide rose she took on water and sank. (The crew were in the pub at the time). She was dried out and there was no major damage to her In 1984 OCEAN DAWN finally gave up fishing, when she was sold to the Colne Shipping Co Ltd to be converted into a 100 class stand by vessel. She worked in the southern North Sea, doing 21-day trips with a crew of 6 or 7 and accommodation for 10 (this accommodation is still in place). She was re-named REWGA, and can be seen in the book “Fishing with Diversity”. After being sold in 1987 to a Swedish Co. She reverted back to her old name. OCEAN DAWN had several owners in Sweden until 1997, when a private owner bought her and brought her back to the South coast. The current owners of OCEAN DAWN have converted her to sleep five in three cabins in the old fish hold, which also has a saloon area, shower and toilet. The crew quarters are still the same as when she was fishing, with ten bunks in the aft section below decks. There is a full galley and mess area in the deck house.

The vessel can comfortably maintain high operating speeds in wave heights at 2 meters. At these speeds the vessel is very fuel efficient and with the benefit of gyro-stabilisers the vessel can loiter at sea without the vessel “rolling” uncomfortably. In addition to crew transfer, this vessel could work in many other roles including marine ambulance, patrol, safety etc. It has been built as a demonstration proof of concept vessel and either the prototype could be sold or parties can have vessels built specifically to their end-user specification.
