General Description
This specification describes the design and construction of an aluminium vessel that shall be arranged to operate as an Oceanographic Research Vessel. The vessel will be constructed to a high commercial standard with particular attention to minimising noise transference and vibration.

Design and Attributes
The vessel is designed by Bakewell-White Yacht Design Limited. The vessel layout will be as per the design study drawing P0-00 supplied. The hull form is well proven and will be multi-chined with a fine entry, moderately deep vee and wide chine flats. The hull will have a slight warp in the bottom aft sections making it slightly more conventional in form.
The structural design will be based on Lloyds Register Rules and Regulations for Special Service Craft, G3 Service Group. Service Group 3 covers craft intended for service in coastal waters, reasonable weather, and generally in waters where the range to refuge is 150 nautical miles or less. For purposes of structural design the worst intended conditions will be defined as 1 m significant wave height at 25 knots cruising speed, or maximum lightweight speed in 0.4 m significant wave height, whichever is the more onerous condition.


The vessel is designed to provide the following attributes:
• Stable platform for research work
• Good day and night helm visibility for vessel operation
• Good manoeuvrability in all conditions
• Dryness on deck
• Low noise at all speeds


The design and the construction of the vessel will be in accordance with Survey requirements selected by the Client.
The Builder will appoint an approved Surveyor to carry out survey inspections during construction as per Survey requirements. The Builder to include the costs of the Surveyor, compass swinging and radio inspection.


The hull and cabin will be of all welded aluminium construction. All structural aluminium plating from 4 to 12mm thickness, as well as extruded hull stiffeners, will be 5383 Alcan Marine Sealium alloy.
All other structural aluminium grades will be as follows:
Plate 5083 H116
Extrusions 6082-T6, 6061-T6

The exterior decks will be fabricated from aluminium plate. Decks will have sheer or camber as required to ensure free draining. All decks will be flush with the top of the fenders and free draining. The wheel house interior decks will be Gaboon plywood, with Acoustop Barrier Ply as required for sound attenuation. The plywood will be bonded and mechanically fastened to the aluminium deck beams with stiffening to ensure minimal flex. All plywood will be epoxy sealed prior to installation.

The vessel will be fitted with 450mm Popsure boat fendering systems. The system is manufactured from high energy absorbing resilient closed cell polyethylene foam, encapsulated within high performance polyurethane elastomer skin. The elastomer skin will be reinforced with layers of fabric materials for additional performance. A polyethylene pipe will be inserted into the foam fender and secured in place with a stainless steel cable running through the pipe. The cable will be tensioned via eyebolts at the transom.

One OceanLift LD400 (or similar) 12V crane will be supplied and mounted on the aft deck. The crane will be mounted approximately 700mm above the deck and extend approximately 600mm below the deck. The crane will be rated for 300kg on a 2 metre boom. The crane will be fitted with a DC winch and remote pendant for operation.


The interior finish is to meet the standards applicable to a good commercial standard of interior finish. Attention will be given to provide a hard wearing robust interior.
Linings and ceilings will be fitted in the main cabin space to conceal all cabling, ducts, piping and other services. Panels in areas that need to be accessible for servicing purposes will be fitted with detachable mechanical fastening systems such as FastMount clips or similar. Suitable hand holds will be provided within the upper cabin such as on the back of the seats or overhead rails or vertical cabin mounted poles. The final method will be determined by the Purchaser.
The Upper cabin contains the navigation bridge and passenger seating. Internal stair access to the lower cabin is situated forward and to Starboard of the helm position.
The lower cabin area comprises a head/shower facility fwd to Port with secure stowage opposite to Starboard. Central is a substantial galley area to Starboard with Crew Mess to Port. Aft of the mess are two separate sleeping cabins, the port cabin having two berths with personal stowage and the Starboard having Four berths and provides internal access to the engine/machinery space aft.

All equipment fitted to or stowed on the vessel must be fitted in such a way that it will be able to withstand the vertical accelerations and vibrations expected in this type of vessel.


Anchor and Mooring Equipment:
This system will conform to Survey requirements. The main anchor will be a 36KG super high holding anchor. Rode will be 20 m x 13 mm short link chain and 100 m x 14 mm threestrand white nylon line.
The Builder will supply four 15m, 28 mm diameter Polyester mooring ropes. A secondary 40KG plough anchor will be supplied with the appropriate warp as per the requirements of Survey. The secondary anchor and warp will be stowed in the mid stowage locker. A folding bow roller will be fabricated and fitted to the bow of the vessel.
When not in use the bow roller will fold aft onto the foredeck and be flush with the deck.
A 12V DC Maxwell VW2200 (or similar) anchor winch will be fitted on the foredeck. The winch will be controlled via a foot switch at the winch.
The locker will be lined with marine plywood and fitted with a drain. Access to the locker will be via a flush fitting hinged hatch.


Fire Fighting Equipment:
Will conform to Survey requirements. The following Fire Fighting equipment will be supplied and fitted:
• 1 x 4.5 kg portable extinguisher, Class 3A, will be fitted in the cabin area.
• 2 x 9 kg portable extinguishers, Class 80B, fitted inside each engine Compartment.
• 1x safety lamp
• 1x fire axe
• 1x fire hydrant
• 1x 15m lay-flat hose with suitable nozzle
• 1x power pump fitted to one main engine (see para. 6.2)
• Signs to identify all fire fighting appliances and their location.
• The engine room will be fitted with a Seafire FM200 pr-engineered fire suppression system. The manual activation controls will be fitted at the helm.


Life Saving Equipment:
The following safety equipment will be supplied and fitted:
• 4 x lifebuoys with two of the lifebuoys with buoyant lines, two self igniting light and man overboard systems. One lifebuoy will be fitted with a remote deployment system operated from the main helm station.
• 20 x RFD XM Quick Fit manual inflatable life jackets will be provided. The jackets will be approved by USCG
• 2 x buoyant smoke signals
• 4 x red rocket parachute flares
• 1 x First Aid kit
• 1 x GPS Epirb, 406 MHz Cat 1 with hydrostatic release
• Boat hook
• Sheppard’s Crook lifeboat, revere-ocean master, 10 people, coastal basket type


Navigation Equipment:
The following navigation equipment will be supplied and fitted:
• A Hella marine electric horn of suitable capacity
• Compass, Ritchie FB 500 Globe master
• Compass light
• Searchlight manually controlled from wheelhouse
• Clock with time periods
• Optisan marine binoculars 7x50
• LED navigation lights,

The lights will be individually controlled from the wheelhouse switch panel.


Electronic Equipment:
In general, the Builder has allowed to install the following components:
• 2 x VHF Radio telephone
• Sounder with in hull transducer
• GPS antenna
• 2 x LCD displays for sounder and Radar
• Inmarsat Mini-M, with antenna satellite weather station
LCD display 17 '' on the Bridge with RS232 port
• AIS Transponder and LCD display
• Radar Scanner
• CD/AM-FM player
• PA system with external speakers
• Antennas as required
• Purchaser supplied computer and aerial

Two MAN R6 800 CRM diesel engines rated at 596kW (800hp) @ 2300 rpm will be supplied.
The engines will be supplied with full analogy instrumentation and an EMS display. Engine instrumentation panels will be fitted at the main control station only. Engines will be handed for left or right hand servicing as provided by the
Engine Manufacturer and will be fitted with block heaters.
The engine supplier will supply a Torsional Vibration Analyses, including all components of the drive-train. Engine dynamometer test sheets will also be supplied with each engine. The reduction box output flange will be laser aligned with the half coupling.


Propulsion and Drivetrain:
The following drive train components will be supplied and installed:
• 2x MGX 5114 A Quick Shift reduction boxes
• 2x Hamilton HJ364 Waterjets – Blue Arrow Control is a recommended option
